The Murder at Old Fields forensics lab activity is broken out into easy-to-use modules so that teachers can fit the case within the time period available – including an entire semester!
Activity Includes floor plan maps and evidence keys
These modules include:
Each lab begins with a lesson on the basics of the particular Forensics Evidence tool being studies. (Ex: In the case of the Hair Analysis Lab, it begins with a lesson on the structure of hair, and how it can be used as an identifying characteristic.)
The second activity is the collection, examination and categorization of a sample from the student. (Ex: Again, for the Hair Analysis Lab, students will collect, examine and categorize their own hair sample. This will familiarize the student with the process of Hair Analysis.)
The third activity is the examination and categorization of the control sample of evidence from the suspects and victims. (These clearly-marked and cross-referenced control samples are included in the Murder At Old Fields kit. Ex: Hair Sample – Victim 1 – Alexander Smith)
The fourth activity is the examination and categorization of evidence from the crime scene itself. (included in the kit - Ex: Hair Sample – Window Sill - East Room).
Then, in a summary table, the evidence from the crime scene is matched with the characteristics of the sample of the victims and suspects, and a picture begins to emerge as to the nature of the crime, based on the evidence.
